Glaucoma Consultants of Washington Surgery Information

Surgery for glaucoma is usually needed when medications are no longer effective in controlling the pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure).  The surgery is an outpatient procedure and will be performed at one of the surgery center's listed in the left hand column of this page.  It is important that you have a presurgical physical with either your primary care physician or cardiologist to ensure that you are medically cleared for surgery.  You may be required to have an EKG and blood work based on your age and past medical history.  It is important that these results be complete and forwarded to our office at least 3 days prior to your scheduled surgery date.  In addition, we would like for you to stop all bood thinners at least 10 days prior to the surgery date.  This includes (but not limited to) Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, Aspirin and NSAID's (ibuprofen, naproxen etc.).  Your primary doctor is aware of this requirement and will review your medical history to make sure that it is safe to withold these medications in anticipation of your surgery.  Please review specific requirements for each surgery center in the handouts that you received during your appointment.  Call the office during regular business hours if you have any further questions at (240) 804-1234 or (703) 232-1717
