What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a slowly progressive disease of the optic nerve (“the silent thief”) which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Glaucoma does not have noticeable symptoms, which is why many people do not realize they have glaucoma or that their glaucoma is worsening unless they are screened for it. While there is no cure for glaucoma, we can successfully prevent progression of the disease using a variety of treatment methods, including medical therapy, laser procedures, and surgery. This disease can run in the family, which is why we strongly encourage you to tell your blood relatives to be screened as soon as possible. With consistent treatment and follow up, glaucoma can be well managed and controlled.
